On the west coast of Africa situated between Guinea and Liberia lies the Republic of Sierra Leone, a former British Colony commonly known for its abundance of mineral resources and its recent Civil War. Sierra Leone is one of the poorest countries in Africa with an approximate GDP per capita of $800 US and an estimated 70% of the population living below the poverty line.
The education system in Sierra Leone is burdened with financial, infrastructural and staffing shortages. The government has committed a large percentage of its annual budget to the development of education but has not been able to keep pace with the demand driven by significant enrollment increases during the last five years.
Infrastructure development, curriculum enhancement and ongoing instructor training are a few of the ways that Nations Cry is helping to build a stronger education system in Sierra Leone (see below for details of specific projects).
Waterloo Community School
Nations Cry has purchased a 10 acre property in Waterloo, a growing community located 30 kilometres outside the capital city of Freetown. Waterloo has a large population of school-aged children and a great need for capacity expansion at the Junior Secondary School level.
Nations Cry is formulating plans to build a Junior Secondary School that will provide free education to the low income children in Waterloo.
