Messie was born in the Eastern Province, Sierra Leone. She is an orphan, having lost her mother when she was four years old and her father a few years later. Both her parents were farmers working in cocoa plantations.

After she became an orphan, Messie moved to live with a family friend. In the beginning, she was welcomed into the family and was adjusting to her new life. She was so happy to be able to go to the local school and continue with her education. However, the living arrangements started to deteriorate and as a result, Messie was forced to move out and find another home. She found a place with a neighbour who provided Messie with food and shelter in spite of having seven children of her own to provide for. She also encouraged Messie to continue with her schooling, eventually leading her to Pathway Academy.

Messie has displayed resilience and perseverance during a tumultuous period in her young life. One key theme is Messie’s love of school and her determination to obtain an education. Each day, she looks forward to going to school and feels supported by teachers at Pathway Academy who encourage her in her studies. It is Messie’s hope that when she graduates, she will be able to pay back the help she has received by teaching and leading the next generation of young students.
