Zainab

Zainab is an orphan from the town of Bongimadown which is in the Eastern Province of Sierra Leone. Her parents perished in an accidental fire and she currently lives with her grandmother. The source of the family’s income comes from the sale of firewood, an unreliable source of income. After paying for food and shelter, it can be difficult to find the money to pay for school fees. This is why Zainab, who is a person with a disability, feels fortunate to be admitted to Pathway Academy as a student in the Secondary School.

Growing up with a disability meant Zainab was often targeted by other students when she was in primary school and subjected to bullying from neighbours. Zainab’s young life has been marked by tragedy and hardship, and it is often a struggle to meet basic needs such as food and shelter.

At Pathway Academy, Zainab has the opportunity to meet and befriend fellow students who have experienced similar situations like hers. Zainab feels free because she is accepted and supported by fellow students, teachers, and staff. She is among her peers and is able to focus on her studies. She is making friends, learning at school, and moving forward toward her goal of one day becoming a medical doctor. With the support of generous sponsors, Zainab has the chance to fulfil her goal.
